  • HIN 1114: Principles of Literary Criticism & Forms of Literature.
  • MST 1221: Mauritian Studies I
  • MST 2122: Mauritian Studies II
  • A brief knowledge about the history of Mauritius
  1. Overview of  Module

Within a short span (1909 to date), Mauritian Hindi Literature has developed significantly. It would be most interesting for students to probe into the socio-historical factors that led to the choice of  Hindi as a medium for literature and into the hazy beginnings of Mauritian writing in Hindi through the earliest Hindi articles, the earliest poems of the pioneers; to see how the literary movement gathered momentum to culminate into the rich harvest of  the present day. There is Mauritian Hindi writing – a typical Mauritianism which needs to be studied.  The study of the history of Mauritian Literature will thus provide for a look at the trends and writings of a number of Mauritian authors. Students will be required to study a selection of representative writings, both prose and poetry, of Mauritian Hindi writers and poets.

Mr. K. Goodary & Mr. G. Bissessur will jointly teach this module.

NB: CONSULT YOUR OWN WEB-BLOG REGULARLY for notes, feedback, hwk: http://www.hindimgi.wordpress.com

Procedure

The whole class will be divided into 7 groups for the Exposé. The group for the assigned presentation is expected to do research on the author, background, on the different aspects of the particular short story and critically analyse it. Time allotted should not exceed 20 mins. Marking will be done on the team’s performance & not on individual basis. So, emphasise on the style of your presentation, clarity of language, content, research & preparation, originality, and interaction with the class among others.

  • Each student is expected to read and prepare the short stories or any other topic on which the lecture will be based well beforehand. This will enhance a motivating atmosphere for her/him as well as for the lecturer while lecture will be delivered. So, prepare your work well. I am expecting the class to frequently interact and ask questions! Also note that limited critics & materials are available regarding this module, so based on your analysis of literature & on previous knowledge, short stories will have to be analysed on your own; this requires double effort!
